3 Day Travel Itinerary for Visiting Kottayam

Kottayam

Here is a practical 3-day Kottayam itinerary with a tourist places table based on the most commonly visited and well-known attractions in and around Kottayam district. I have treated “popularity” as a visitor-friendly ranking using Kerala Tourism listings plus broad traveler prominence across major travel sources. Fees can change, and several places either have no fixed entry ticket or do not clearly publish one online, so I’ve marked those as Free / Not publicly stated where needed.

Day 1: Kottayam Town + Kumarakom

Start your trip with the cultural side of Kottayam. Visit Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple in the morning because it is centrally located and one of the city’s best-known heritage landmarks. Then head toward Thazhathangady Juma Masjid, noted for its historic importance and distinctive wooden architecture. After lunch, travel to Kumarakom for a slower backwater experience. Spend the evening at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and, if time allows, add the Bay Island Driftwood Museum nearby. This day is light, scenic, and easy for first-time visitors.

Suggested flow:
Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple → Thazhathangady Juma Masjid → Lunch in Kottayam/Kumarakom → Bay Island Driftwood Museum → Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary → Backwater sunset

Day 2: Heritage + Palaces + Village Side

Keep the second day for history and architecture. Travel to Poonjar Palace, one of the best heritage sites in the district, known for its old royal collections and traditional Kerala palace style. If you enjoy relaxed countryside drives, continue through the Pala–Erattupetta side and spend some time in the surrounding village landscape. You can keep the evening flexible for a short town walk, shopping, or a peaceful backwater dinner if you are staying near Kumarakom.

Suggested flow:
Breakfast early → Poonjar Palace → Explore nearby heritage surroundings → Lunch near Pala/Poonjar → Leisure evening in Kottayam or Kumarakom

Day 3: Hills + Nature

Use the final day for nature. If you want dramatic views, choose Illikkal Kallu early in the morning. If you prefer a valley and open hill scenery, Ilaveezhapoonchira is a strong choice. If you are comfortable with a bit of trekking, Marmala Waterfalls is another rewarding stop. Because these are more spread out and involve road travel and sometimes walking, it is best to keep this day focused on one main hill area and one secondary stop only.

Suggested flow option A:
Illikkal Kallu → Lunch → Ilaveezhapoonchira → Return

Suggested flow option B:
Poonjar side breakfast → Marmala Waterfalls → Short rest → Scenic drive back

Place Notes

  • Illikkal Kallu is one of the most popular natural attractions near Kottayam and is especially known for viewpoints and mountain scenery.
  • Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is one of Kottayam’s signature attractions and is ideal for birdwatching, nature walks, and peaceful surroundings.
  • Bay Island Driftwood Museum is a unique stop in Kumarakom and is suitable for a short but interesting visit.
  • Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is a key heritage site in central Kottayam and fits well into a shorter town visit.
  • Poonjar Palace is one of the district’s strongest heritage attractions and usually takes around 1 to 2 hours to explore properly.
  • Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is a historic stop best visited briefly and respectfully, especially outside prayer hours.
  • Ilaveezhapoonchira is best for open valley scenery, trekking, and sunset or sunrise views.
  • Marmala Waterfalls is a scenic attraction and is best for travelers who enjoy a little walking and a nature setting.
  • Kumarakom backwater boating and Pathiramanal-side trips are activity-based experiences, so the cost depends on boat type, duration, and operator.

Best Plan for Most Visitors

For most travelers, the smoothest plan is:

  • Day 1: Kottayam town + Kumarakom
  • Day 2: Poonjar heritage circuit
  • Day 3: Illikkal Kallu or Ilaveezhapoonchira + one nature stop

This gives you a balanced trip with city heritage, backwaters, palace history, and hill scenery without making any single day too rushed.
